In recent months, Audubon has been notified that some members have received renewal offers from fraudulent companies asking them to renew or extend their membership to AUDUBON magazine.

The following companies do not represent National Audubon Society, Inc:

  • Publishers Billing Exchange, 216 Lemmon Drive, Reno, NV 89506
  • National Magazine Service Inc, PO Box 98, Elmsford, NY 10523
  • Publishers Billing Exchange, PO Box 7004, La Habra, CA 90632
  • Publishers Billing Association, 1359 E. Flamingo Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89119
  • Other Known Companies: PBE, Publishers Billing Center, National Magazine Service, National Magazine Services, Subscription Business Center

This is a problem for many organizations that offer a subscription or membership to a magazine. Unscrupulous companies will use mail, phone and email solicitations to obtain your bank account or credit card information and they may be persistent in getting you to renew over the phone. Do not divulge any of your payment information to any of the above companies by mail or by phone. Do not send them checks or money orders. Do not make checks payable to these fraudulent companies.

Genuine renewal notices from the National Audubon Society, always contain our name and logo.  In addition the letter or envelope will include our national headquarters address:

225 Varick Street, 7th Floor

New York, NY 10014

The return envelope (with which to send your payment) will list one of our two P.O. Box addresses:

P.O. Box 41543, Philadelphia, PA 19101-1543

or,

P.O. Box 422247, Palm Coast, FL 32142-6716

We ALWAYS request that checks be payable to “National Audubon Society.” If you suspect that you have received a fraudulent renewal notice in the mail, please call our customer service number at 1-800-274-4201 and then report the incident to your local Postmaster and Attorney General, so that they may conduct a proper investigation on the company.

Your first issue of AUDUBON magazine should arrive at your home roughly 4 to 6 weeks after your order has been processed. Please remember that AUDUBON is published bi-monthly (January/February, March/April, May/June, July/August, September/October and November/December), so your wait may vary or seem longer than normal. If you believe that you have waited too long to receive your first issue, please contact us at Audubon@emailcustomerservice.com and put “New Member” in the subject line or call us toll free at (800) 274-4201.

If you've joined by mail or the internet you will receive your Membership “Welcome to Audubon” package (which includes your Membership card and a thank you letter) within 3 to 4 weeks in the mail from the date your membership is processed. Please be advised that periodically we may send copies of your Member card in the mail with our renewal and appeal notices.

If you have made your contribution by mail or by phone, you should receive your acknowledgement letter (which also serves as your tax receipt) within 2 to 4 weeks of when your contribution is processed. If you have made your contribution via the internet, then you should receive an acknowledgement email immediately after your contribution has been processed (this can also serve as your tax receipt).

If you live in an area served by one of our 500 local chapters, you will be assigned to a chapter based upon your zip code and the chapter will receive notification of your membership shortly after you join the National Audubon Society. The chapter will contact you with information about meetings, program, trips, etc. To find out more about our chapters, or if you have additional questions, please send an email to Audubon Chapter Services or call (800) 542-2748.

AUDUBON magazine is published bi-monthly and issues are mailed for delivery to arrive at your home during the first week of January, March, May, July, September and November. Delivery of your issue could be delayed for a variety or reasons, so we recommend waiting until after the third week of the scheduled delivery months (as noted above) before asking for a replacement copy. If you require a replacement copy, please contact us at Audubon@emailcustomerservice.com and put “Replacement Copy” in the subject line or call us toll free at (800) 274-4201.

Sometimes magazines get damaged during the mailing and delivery process. If the current issue arrived at your home, severely damaged (missing cover, missing pages, pages stuck together) we ask that you send us an email at Audubon@emailcustomerservice.com and put “Damaged Magazine” in the subject line or call us toll free at (800) 274-4201.

In many cases, our mailings are prepared weeks in advance, and some members receive a renewal notice after they have already renewed. If you have recently renewed your membership and have received a renewal notice, your payment and our reminder mailing have probably just crossed in the mail. Please ignore this reminder as we are in the midst of processing your renewal. Should a second one reach you, however, please contact us at Audubon@emailcustomerservice.com or call us toll free at (800) 274-4201, so that we may investigate and resolve this issue.

Occasionally, a member is listed multiple times within our database. Multiple listings can be created for many reasons, including donation with change of name, change of address or spouses making their donations separately. We try to avoid this, so if you are receiving duplicate copies of the magazine or other mailings, please contact us as soon as possible at Audubon@emailcustomerservice.com with “Duplicate Copies” in the subject line or call us toll free at (800) 274-4201, so that we may investigate and resolve this issue.  We can merge your multiple records permanently in our system and fix the problem. Many of our mailings are prepared several weeks in advance; it may take a few weeks after you contact us before the update to your membership is fully applied.  In the meantime, please consider giving the extra mailing to someone else who might be interested.

The “Paper Free Renewal” Program is a great way to guarantee that you receive uninterrupted service of Audubon magazine while also helping us to conserve paper. Members who enroll in this program do not receive renewal reminders through the mail. The program is simple: each year on the anniversary of your first payment into the program, Audubon will charge your credit card for the initial amount you contributed upon joining the program. In addition, prior to the charge Audubon will notify you via a post card, so that you may contact Audubon to make a change to your donation or stop the payment. If you are interested in signing up for this program, please email us at Audubon@emailcustomerservice.com with “Paper Free Renewal” in the subject line or sign up by calling us toll free at (800) 274-4201.

Yes, Audubon has a monthly giving program called Audubon Advocates and any donor can join this special group of members provided that you pledge a fixed amount each month via your credit card. This fixed amount is automatically deducted on a monthly basis. Members who join the Audubon Advocates are part of a special group of donors who provide a critical and reliable source of funding by making donations on a monthly basis. As an Audubon Advocate, you are entitled to full membership benefits and guaranteed uninterrupted service of our flagship, bi-monthly publication AUDUBON magazine. For your participation you will receive a statement of your activity once a quarter, as well as a year-end tax statement. Audubon Advocates do not receive renewal reminders and can cancel at any time. If you are interested in signing up for this program online please click here or email us at audubonadvocate@audubon.org.

Participating in either or both of Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count or the Great Backyard Bird Count is a great way to have fun outdoors while actively participating in our conservation mission. Through the Christmas Bird count we have been able to track bird populations since 1900, which provides important science data that makes a real difference. Now run for over 13 years, the Great Backyard Bird Count is a fun way to get outside with family and friends, have fun, and help birds—all at the same time.

If you would like to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count click here.

Yes, if you see the National Audubon Society logo on a product for sale you can be confident that the product is part of our licensed product line. By purchasing these products you are helping to support our conservation work. While Audubon does not sell its licensed merchandise directly, you can see a list of companies that are approved as licensees by the National Audubon Society, as well as some of our featured products by visiting Marketplace.audubon.org.

If you need to find out what month you are scheduled to receive your last issue of AUDUBON magazine, you can look at the label of your most recent magazine. On the second line beneath the bar coding, towards the middle of the label you will see a date which shows the issue in which you expire (Ex: M/J10, indicating your membership expires May/June 2010). If you cannot find the date on the label, please contact us by email at Audubon@emailcustomerservice.com or by phone at (800) 274-4201 and we will let you know when you will receive your last issue of AUDUBON.

If you are entitled to a free gift with your membership or donation, it should arrive at you home within 6 to 8 weeks of when your contribution payment was processed. Sometimes delays can occur, so we recommend waiting an additional week before contacting us about your missing free gift. If you are still concerned about the status of your free gift, please contact us by email at Audubon@emailcustomerservice.com and put “Free Gift” in the subject line.

Audubon, like many other non-profit organizations, occasionally shares its membership list with carefully selected organizations whose mailings you may find of interest. However, Audubon never sells or exchanges it members’ phone numbers or email addresses to outside organizations. If you would prefer that Audubon does not provide your name for mailing to other organizations, please contact us at Audubon@emailcustomerservice.com and put “Do Not Share” in the subject line.
